My Journey to Becoming a Doula

My journey into birth work began over a decade ago during my first pregnancy with a simple book recommendation. I had never given much thought to how I wanted to birth and assumed I would follow the typical medicated path. But something shifted in me as I read and saw photos of women birthing radiantly, unhindered, and deeply in their power. My mind opened to the possibility that birth didn’t have to be something to fear or numb. I knew that I wanted to fully feel and experience my labor.

My passion for birth quickly grew and I began to pour my heart, mind, and body into birth preparation. I took a comprehensive childbirth class with my husband, focused on nourishing my body through food and movement, practiced breathing exercises, and read all the birth books I could find.

My first experience giving birth changed me in ways I never could have imagined. It awakened a deep connection to my body and inner strength that I had never accessed before. I emerged transformed, in awe of what I had experienced and what I was capable of. A fire was lit inside me and I couldn’t stop thinking or talking about birth. I wanted everyone to know what was possible.

With each baby I welcomed, my passion for birth kept growing stronger. When I was pregnant with my third baby, I had the privilege of supporting my sister through her first birth. Being by her side felt natural, intuitive, and right. I knew then deep in my bones that being a doula was what I was meant to do. It wasn’t the right time for me to pursue that path yet, but I kept dreaming about it for years.

After the birth of my fourth baby, I couldn’t ignore the call to birth work any longer. Becoming a doula felt like coming home.

The last several years I’ve had the profound honor of walking alongside many birthing families, witnessing the raw power, strength, and beauty of birth. Every experience has left me humbled, inspired, and filled with gratitude that I get to do what I love with my whole heart.

A little more about me…

  • I grew up in Utah and have lived here most of my life. I also love exploring the world and have also traveled to almost every continent and studied abroad in Israel. I love being able to experience other cultures and see more of our beautiful world.
  • I have always homeschooled some or all of my four kids. I love the extra time homeschooling gives us to play, read, and spend time in nature.
  • Hiking in the mountains is my happy place, especially if I am having a good conversation with my husband or a friend. I can’t imagine living somewhere without mountains!
  • I love books and am always in the middle of multiple audiobooks.
  • Whenever I leave or come home from a birth at night, I look for the moon and take a moment of stillness and gratitude.
  • My favorite color is green (it’s too hard to pick just one shade – I love so many of them) and I love filling my home with green plants.
  • My yoga practice at a local studio helps keep my grounded and connected to myself. After years of waking up all night with my babies, I am especially grateful I can wake up early and start my day with yoga.
  • One of my passions is finding good picture books and reading them with my kids. I aspire to write one of my own, maybe even about birth!
  • I am an Enneagram 2, the “Helper.” I really care about my relationships and being connected with others. I find great meaning and fulfillment in helping others feel seen, loved, and cared for. I bring a natural compassion, warmth, and ability to anticipate needs to the birth space.
